What is DSL, and Why Do I Want It?

DSL stands for "Digital Subscriber Line."
It has become the preferred method of
connecting businesses to the Internet.

Most companies have a simple goal- They want to make the Internet part of their business computing environment, and offer basic services
(Internet access, Email) to their staff.
DSL is an excellent way to do this for most businesses.

NOTE: 8/6/01 - Due to the continued failure of DSL providers, SoftProse Technology, Inc. must caution business users to consider alternative connectivity options. This includes:

  • Cable Modem service, with a "business package" and fixed TCP/IP addresses. This may be the most cost effective replacement, if you can get fixed TCP/IP addresses. It may also be Faster and Less Expensive than most DSL service.
  • "Hot Building" service, with T1 service to a basement distribution router or to a "wireless fiber" microwave disk on the roof. This is the most common replacement for traditional DSL.
  • T1 or Fractional TI to the office. This has become cost effective if merged with at least six lines of office phone service. Solutions, with six lines and synchronous 512K data rates, start at $330 per month with $150 installation. Please inquire for details.
  • Phone-Company DSL - Verizon and local "baby" Bell's have taken over the DSL area with fast ADSL DSL systems using dynamic IP addressing. Can this work for your business? Hundreds of companies now say "Yes" to inexpensive phone system DSL. ISP's often resell the Verizon DSL service, enhancing it with fixed IP addresses. Dynamic DSL providers such as dyndns.org and tzo.com can also resolve issues with Verizon's DSL service.

WHY DO I WANT DSL?

You want a DSL connection for the following reasons:

  • It's FAST. Much faster than a phone-line modem. A 416K DSL connection is almost ten times as fast as a new 56K modem.
  • It's INEXPENSIVE. A phone line modem in a business will cost 1.3 cents per minute to connect to the Internet. A DSL line is a flat fee- Pay once per month, with no additional charges. This should save money in the long run on the cost of an Internet connection for your entire office, while delivering far superior service.
  • It's ALWAYS ON. 24/7, the Internet is available to meet your needs. There is no "time to connect", or any delay in accessing an Internet service.
  • The ENTIRE COMPANY can connect to the Internet on one connection. DSL offers a reasonably priced pipe to the Internet that can give everyone access, if desired.
  • REAL EMAIL. Email has become an essentail business tool. With DSL, you can get "real" Internet Email, and still have quick Email around the office. Create and manage your own Email accounts. Use special services, as with Exchange and Outlook, or Lotus Notes. Hundreds of Email accounts can be on a single server.
  • REMOTE ACCESS. Your staff can use remote access software such as PC Anywhere or Windows Terminal to connect to the internal network from anywhere in the world over the Internet. "Screen Sharing" technology can revolutionize communication with any office service. Note: This presents security concerns. Carefully review any Remote Access installation with maximum security in mind!
  • INTRANET TO INTERNET... Your office Intranet web server could be browsed (slowly) from the Internet. (Not recommended for commercial use, however!)
  • DATA ACCESS, WORLDWIDE. Company databases, files, and networked resources can be accessed, with the proper software, from anywhere in the world. This can be the foundation of satellite office or home worker support options.
  • MOBILE USERS can connect easily to the office network.
  • FILE TRANSFERS can be made reasonably quickly with FTP utilities over the Internet.
  • FLEXIBILITY. You are not locked into a specific speed. Although you can install the connection for one speed, a simple phone call could increase the speed of the connection dramatically as needs change.
