Free Anti-Virus Software

Viruses Must Be Destroyed.
These web sites may do the job,
and are free of charge.

SoftProse Technology, Inc. does NOT like computer viruses, and would like to see problem created by them resolved by any means possible. Although commercial software is, by far, the best way to resolve problems with office networks, sometimes a free resource on the Internet can help a user end a bad experience. For this reason, we have assembled a list of free Anti-Virus software, available from the following Internet web sites.

We have found that many user's problems are caused by SPYWARE OR ADWARE instead of by viruses. Most of these programs are IGNORED by Anti-Virus programs as "commercial software". Please see our SpyWare & Adware protection page. We strongly recommend running Spyware defences regularly in ADDITION to a regularly updated anti-virus program.

Note: We do not formally test and evaluate these services. Your feedback is therefore valuable to us. These sites are suggested for emergency use, and should not be considered a replacement for good-quality anti-virus software from a major vendor. (See our Anti-Virus Proposal) These free services may or MAY NOT be effective at resolving your particular problem with viruses.

FREE Anti-Virus Software

TrendMicro's HouseCall
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Free online scanning of your computer from the Internet. No obligation web scanning with a Java download. (The user must accept signed software to use.) Seems to be legit. The registration process is OPTIONAL (not required).

Anti-Vir Personal Edition
http://www.free-av.com/

European software. Not tested.

AVG Anti-Virus
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Free virus protection for users in the US, Canada, or Great Britan.
Looks like a regular software product, for free. Not tested. Has an update program!

Panda Software
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

They have also jumped on the "free" antivirus bandwagon with their own online free scanner "activescan". Not tested.

McAfee.com's Stinger, from:
http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?path=/virusInfo/virusRemoval/Stinger.asp
will not remove ALL viruses- But it does take out the most dangerous of the "latest" virues. Stinger is a technician's secret weapon both for testing current virus software and for solving difficult infestations.

Spyware and Adware are problems with different solutions.
